Moment: A Solo Exhibition by Elfriede Dreyer at Benguela Galleries, Hermanus
Immerse yourself in a captivating exploration of life's fleeting moments at the 'Moment' exhibition by renowned artist Elfriede Dreyer. Held at Benguela Galleries, Hermanus, this thought-provoking solo show runs from 5 January to 25 April, 2025. Entry is free, making it a fantastic opportunity to experience Dreyer's unique artistic vision.
A Symphony of Words, Images, and Sound
Dreyer's 'Moment' series centres around her piano, a powerful symbol that transcends its physical form. It represents both resilience – having survived the Knysna fires of 2017 – and a conduit for artistic expression.
The works weave a tapestry of words, visuals, and sound, captivating viewers with their depth and complexity.
Artist Statement by Elfriede Dreyer
"The Moment works deal with my piano as both object and instrument," Dreyer explains. "Following a previous series exploring themes of loss and memory, 'Moment' expands on the connection between word, image, and sound. I play with onomatopoeia, words that mimic the sounds they describe, to forge a compelling interplay between these elements."
Dreyer employs a rich visual vocabulary. Layers of black ink are combined with expressive painting, creating a dynamic interplay between the sharp lines of comic book conventions and the raw emotion of paint. Recurring motifs include mountain imagery, symbolizing heightened consciousness, and dialogue balloons, representing the highs and lows of human experience.
Deeper Connections: Dasein and the Human Experience
Dreyer's work is grounded in the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, particularly his concept of Dasein – human beings in their everydayness. Through 'Moment', she explores the interconnectedness of subject, object, consciousness, and the world around us. Heidegger's notion of Geworfenheit, or being "thrown" into life, also resonates deeply within these pieces. The piano, just like the human body, is lifeless until activated, a powerful metaphor for the human experience.
Experience Sound Through QR Codes
Each artwork in the series is accompanied by a unique sound or short composition. Created by Dreyer in collaboration with experimental artist Johan van Huyssteen, these soundscapes further enrich the viewing experience. You can access them easily by scanning conveniently placed QR codes. Imagery of sound waves also features in several works, highlighting the transformative power of the piano and the act of communication itself.
Layered Polyphony: Beyond the Physical World
Dreyer's artistic language extends beyond the confines of the canvas. She incorporates a technique called layered polyphony, where elements are repeated and built upon across physical and digital media. This technique reflects Dreyer's belief in consciousness existing across physical, mental, and virtual realms.
